Towards realization of parallel/distributed vision systems(Fellow Memorial Lecture)

Abstract(in English) One of the problems in computer vision is its large computational cost. Therefore, to construct practical vision-based systems, we require fast or real-time processing, and we have to introduce parallel processing or distributed processing techniques. Recently, multi-view vision systems have been commonly adopted to acquire detailed information of real-world objects and to observe large scale environment, and, therefore, the demand of parallel and distributed vision systems becomes increasing. According to this background, the author have engaged in the research of parallel and distributed vision system, which will be overviewed in this presentation. The topics include software architecture for parallel vision system, vision-based real-time motion capture system based on multi-view image analysis, real-time free viewpoint video system, and object tracking in wide are environments.
