Abstract(in English) We study the polarization independent free space optical switches for wavelength multiplex communication. The switches use a polarization shielded smectic liquid crystal polarization control devices (PSS-PCDS) to change optical paths in the switch. PSS materials have large refractive index changes, microseconds response. The present paper reports the measurement setup and wavelength characteristics of a PSS-PCD in 1530nm-1610nm wavelength.
