Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Border-Ownership (BO) is known as an early mechanism for figure/ground segregation in human vision. BO-selective cells have been reported in the visual cortex of monkeys. A computational model of BO-selective cells has been proposed, which showed a tendency to prefer the inside of convex and parallel line as a figure. Such tendency has been studied in the framework of Gestalt psychology. We hypothesize that the detection of Gestalt factors originates from the surround modulation that is a fundamental nature of the model of BO-selective cells. In this study, we propose to mathematically quantify the Gestalt factors, validate the factors by psychophysical experiments, and evaluate the model with these factors. The results of psychophysics indicated the validity of the proposed parameters. The simulation results showed that the model detected some Gestalt factors, such as convexity and closure, but not others, such as parallel, similarity and proximity, indicating that the surround modulation detects some Gestalt factors but not all.
