Abstract(in English) | The effectiveness of electrotactile otolith substitution, which inputs head tilt information via the tongue, in patients with equilibrium disorder continues after removing the device. However, the mechanism remains unknown. To estimate the effectiveness quantitatively, the time course of tilt perceptions before, during, and after wearing the device was measured in normal subjects (n=25). The enhancing effect of tilt perception continued after removing the device in the standing position but not in the sitting position. These results suggest that proprioceptive information from the lower body plays an important role in generating a long-lasting effect. We hypothesize that plastic changes in the brain occur due to synchronized inputs between head tilt information from the device and proprioceptive information from the lower body. |
