Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Areas MT (middle temporal) and MST (medial superior temporal) involve neurons that are closely related to the analysis of visual motion. An important question whether neurons in these areas are tuned to speed of visual motion is still remained open. In particular, for area MST, no systematic study has been carried out. This study was performed to clarify if the MT/MST neurons are tuned for speed independent of stimulus form or features. The dependence of neural activities on spatiotemporal frequency of moving sinusoidal stimuli was examined. If a neuron is tuned to speed independent of spatial frequency, the optimal temporal frequency would linearly increase as spatial frequency increases. The dependence on spatiotemporal frequency was examined while the animal was exposed to large-field sinusoidal gratings of different spatial frequencies drifting at different temporal frequencies. In area MST, only the minority of neurons (<9%) could be classified as speed-tuned type: i.e., these neurons might had the same optimal speed independent of spatial frequency. On the other hand, most neurons (78%) could be classified as temporal-frequency-tuned type: i.e., the optimal temporal frequency was independent of the spatial frequency. Compared with area MT, in area MST, the neurons tend to be tuned for temporal frequency, rather than speed. |
