Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Most of cognitive neuroscience studies have focused not on the spontaneous neural activity but task-related activity. However, recent evidence demonstrated that spontaneous fluctuations in neuronal activity reflect intrinsic functional architecture of the brain. In the present study, we examined the temporal storage capacity of posterior parietal neurons by calculating the temporal correlation of the spontaneous activity during the fixation period of a visually-guided saccade task. We also examined the information retention capacity of the same neurons for representation of the target position by analyzing the activity during the delay period of a memory-guided saccade task. We found a correlation between these two capacities. Thus, it is suggested that the neuronal behavior for information retention under a task constraint can be explained by the intrinsic storage capacity of the neuron.
