Research Trend and Future Perspective on Optical Networking Technologies : Conceptual Proposal of Content-based Switching Network

Abstract(in English) Many research activities based on optical technologies have been proceeded in order to construct future information network infrustructure. These approaches lie on different aspects like opaque network, translucent net-work partially relying on electrical processing and forwarding on nodes, all-optical and transparent network as a far future soution, and moreover, new generation overlay network architecture based on so-called network virtualization. In this paper, such research trends are overviewed briefly, and my own future perspective is described. Next, our several ongoing research topics related to the above perspective are briefly introduced. As one of important examples, in this paper, new concept of "Content-based Swithing Network(CSN)" is presented to support future applications that transfer a large volume of contents and files. CSN performs store-and-forward operation between adjacent nodes, according to content-by-content switching discipline without chopping each content into small pieces like packets. This link-by-link content-level relay mechanism makes us erase tranport layer protocols like TCP, and as a result, simple transmission architecture can be established.
