Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | We have developed a new 900-km submarine WDM system that is designed to 40-Gbps / ch transmission, which was deployed between Kyusyu-land and Okinawa-Island located in southwestern Japan. The transmission line facilities are designed to be available 30 ch x 40-Gbps transmission by installing 40-G base terminal equipment(TE)at each end, though it is operated as a 10-G base DWDM system up to 80 ch initially. By computer simulations and transmission experiments in laboratories, we investigated GVD(Group Velocity Dispersion)- nonlinear penalties to decide install fiber types and dispersion management. By experiments, we fixed the allowable DGD of transmission line facilities to below 2.6 ps considering PMD time variations during 25-years system life. We measured the PMD of installed submarine facilities to confirm the DGD was not more than 2.6 ps. We applied two techniques to solve the problems caused by the inline amplifiers. One is the insertion of programmable optical filters to reduce the cumulated ASE noise. The other is the use of continuous dummy lights to suppress optical surges originated from transitional response. As a result, we verified the maximum measured DGD=2.5 ps including 2-sigma margins, which enables the 30 ch x 40 G WDM transmission. |
