Abstract(in English) A ski boot is important for assisting progress in ski turning technique as an interface between a skier and a ski. Especially in alpine ski races, suitability of design of the boots for racers becomes more important to achieve accurate and quick lean of the leg in ski turns. This study aimed at building a new design method of a ski boot that can improve the results of alpine ski races. In this paper, design method for the optimum height of a ski boot based on features of the leg frame of Japanese alpine ski racers was analytically and experimentally examined. The interrelation between the results of laboratory experiments on leaning balance and gliding time of giant slalom tests was examined, and ensured a new method of an individual design of an upper shell of a ski boot for each alpine ski racer. As a result, it was demonstrated that the optimum design of the upper shell could be determined by using principal component analysis in the laboratory test. Finally, the effectiveness of the new design of the ski boot was verified in giant slalom test.
