Research of Forwarding Performance Predicting Technology for Power Saving of Routers

Abstract(in English) According to the increasing power consumption of network equipment, a demand for reducing the power consumption of network routers exists. We suggest a power saving method by controlling the performance of the router to a suitable amount by referring the amount of received network traffic. The assignment of our method is to take balance between preventing the lack of quality of service and improving the efficiency of power saving, hi this study, we have evaluated two algorithms by using real measured traffic. One algorithm is the burst detecting algorithm, which predicts the suitable performance according to the statistics of traffic over a past month. Another algorithm is the short term fluctuation feedback algorithm, which enables a real-time performance prediction according to the parameters measured inside the router, such as the amount of packets held inside the buffer of the router. As a result of the evaluation, a router adopting the short term fluctuation feedback algorithm was successful in reducing 34% more forwarding performance compared to a router adopting the burst detecting algorithm.
