A Consideration on the Future Direction of Wireless Communications Systems

Abstract(in English) Wireless communication systems have been evolving as a user oriented system since public land mobile communications services were launched in 1979 in Japan. Currently, most of wireless communication systems such as cellular systems, satellite communications systems and wireless LAN are mainly used as a means to enable access to the broadband networks. Wireless systems have been evolving toward higher transmission speed and capacity as the wired systems have been evolving toward more speed and capacity. However, the standardization of 100Gbit/s Ethernet will be completed soon and cellular systems and next generation wireless LAN will support more than Gbit/s transmission speed. It will be a question whether wireless systems should go forward in the same way. This special talk will give an overview of wireless systems such as cellular networks and wireless LAN comparing with the wired networks. In addition, it will point out the importance of applications for wireless communications systems based on the experience of wireless ATM development in MMAC activities. Finally, a perspective on future wireless systems will be discussed.
