Development of wide-area cognitive radio testbed for empirical evaluation of optimized radio selection control on municipal scale

Abstract(in English) The authors have developed the cognitive wireless router system that selects optimum radio system according to the surrounding radio utilizations in order to provide its users with the Internet access. This system is composed of cognitive wireless routers and a server that collects information and executes reconfigurations. The system is cooperatively managed to realize efficient radio resource utilizations that a single cognitive wireless router cannot achieve. However, the feasibility of the system is not sufficiently evaluated as a wide area wireless communication infrastructure. Therefore, we have planned to construct a cognitive radio testbed with 500 cognitive wireless routers in and around Fujisawa city, Japan and management servers in NICT Yokosuka research laboratory to empirically demonstrate and evaluate efficient wireless communications from view point of total performance for users in the area. This paper proposes the testbed specifications and management methods for wide area radio systems to be evaluated in the testbed.
