Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Optical submarine cable systems, which accommodate over 99% of total international traffic in Japan, are so-called social infrastructure in information and communication society. In past two decades, there were big technical breakthroughs in transoceanic submarine cable systems. Since the first introduction of the optical fiber in the trans-pacific submarine cable system in 1989, 1000-fold increase in the system capacity has been achieved in the first decade (1990-2000) due to EDFA repeaters and WDM technologies. In the second decade (200-2010), capacity increase tends to be saturated. In this papaer, the author reviews the feature and evolution of the ultra long-haul submarine cable systems together with dispersion management technology as effective technology to cope with the fiber nonlinear effects. 10Tb/s-class ultra long-haul transmission, demonstrated by many research organizations worldwide after the Paradigm shift due to the coherent detection with digital signal processing, has been introduced. Finally, prespective towards 100Tbit/s systems including multi-core fibers is also addressed.
