Optical Reflectometry Using Optical Frequency Comb with Multi-Phase Modulation

Abstract(in English) As a technology to diagnose the breakdown points in fiber optic networks/devices, various kinds of optical fiber reflectometry have been developed with rapidly improved performance. We proposed an optical coherence domain reflectometry using optical frequency comb (OCDR-OFC), which enables high spatial resolution, large dynamic range, and fast measurement speed at the same time. We succeeded in measuring the reflectivity distribution with 2-cm spatial resolution, over 35-dB dynamic range, and 10-s measurement time. However, the measurement range of OCDR-OFC is currently limited to 1.25-m measurement range as the trade off between spatial resolution and measurement range. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel optical frequency comb generation method with multi-phase modulation to increase the sideband number of generated optical frequency comb. In this basic experiment, we first generate the optical frequency comb using multi-phase modulation. Then we measure the reflectivity profile with the generated optical frequency comb. In the experiment on OCDR using optical frequency comb with multi-phase modulation, we succeeded in demonstrating reflectivity distribution measurement with 5-cm spatial resolution, over 45-dB dynamic range, 10-s measurement time, and 12-m measurement range at the same time. We showed the possibility of the measurement range elongation in a high spatial resolution reflectometry.
