Abstract(in English) | There is a hypothesis that the thalamus is the primary structure involved in closing the sensory gate during sleep. Recent findings which shows amplitude of auditory evoked potential during NREM sleep tends to be larger than that during wakefulness conflicts with the hypothesis. In this study, somatosensory evoked potential in the somatosensory cortex was recorded during different sleep-wake state to examine whether there is a common tendency in the other sensory modality. We found that the somatosensory evoked potentials during NREM sleep were larger than those during wakefulness. On the other hand, the evoked potentials during REM sleep were low amplitude as well as those during wakefulness. Taken together, these results suggest that there is a common mechanism involved in state dependency of sensory evoked potentials and the sensory input is not disrupted at the thalamus level during NREM sleep. |
