Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The rodent's whisker sensory information is transmitted to barrel cortex via ventral posteromedian nucleus (VPM) and posterior medial nucleus (POm) of thalamus. It is suggested that POm transmit whiskering sensation, and VPM transmit both whiskering and steady sensation. In this study, we investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of barrel cortex in response to VPM stimulation using thalamocortical slice preparation of mice, in which thalamus, neocortex and thalamocortecal synaptic connections are kept alive. It is found that the successive two electical stimulation (paired pulse stimulation) to VPM with interval of less than 300-ms showed paired-pulse depression (PPD) of the response in the barrel cortex. The current source-density analysis suggests that the PPD occurrs at the synaptic transmission from VPM to layer 4 neuron in the barrel cortex.
