Interference monitoring in the 2.4GHz band wireless LANs

Abstract(in English) 2.4GHz ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) band is used in not only wireless communication systems such as wireless LAN, Bluetooth or ZigBee, but also ISM equipments such as microwave oven or microwave therapy equipment. A lot of interferences against communication systems are present in 2.4GHz band. This paper proposes a simple monitoring method using the IEEE802.11 wireless LAN functions so as to detect the interferences that affect its communications. The proposed method has two criteria for interference detection: One is "interference level" by the CS (Carrier Sense) and ED (Energy Detection) functions. The other is "number of errored frames" by the error detection function. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, its measurement results are compared with that of a spectrum analyzer by using three interferences which are wireless camera, wireless television and microwave oven. As the results, in terms of the maintenance of wireless LAN link, it is verified that the interference detection of proposed method are the same as that of the spectrum analyzer.
