Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Notable technological progress and market expansion has been achieved in mobile multimedia services, such as mobile internet connection, location-aware services, and e-money, owing to evolution of mobile terminals and supporting infrastructures and their cost seduction. All of the services put into the market, however, have not always been widely accepted, and have not always been uninterruptedly and properly operated. Failures, errors, and mistakes in developing, marketing, and operating such services are well worth studying. This report presents case studies of: i) liquidation of Mobile Broadcasting Corporation of Japan, ii) termination of push-to-talk services provided by cellular network operators based on voice-over-IP technology, and iii) recent failures in cellular communication networks and software errors in mobile terminals. Chronicles, technological backgrounds, probable causes of the failures, and comparison with other countries are presented.
