Spatial resolution improvement of distributed optical fiber strain measurement by scattered-light power estimation using Wiener filter

Abstract(in English) A method is proposed for improving the spatial resolution of a distributed fiber optic strain measurement based on Brillouin scattering, using a Wiener filter, and the measurement characteristics are investigated by simulation. With this method, the scattered light powers (SLPs) within a fiber section that corresponds to the improved spatial resolution are calculated by applying a Wiener filter to the SLPs observed in the longitudinal direction of the fiber at each measurement frequency. The center frequency of the spectrum is then obtained from the SLP calculated at the same measurement distance. Simulations clarified that the increase of the center frequency leading part could be improved from two to six times compared with the conventional method, due to calculation of the center frequency from the observed power spectrum when changed to a rectangular shape.
