Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We describe the design and prototype implementation of a highly realistic face-to-face telecommunication system called "Tele-Face", which enables both verbal and nonverbal communication. This system has three functions for natural communication. First, it transmits real-size video images of the person, thus enabling users to make eye contact with each other. Second, the sound system recreates natural sound as if the person were actually in front of the listener. Third, the physical distance between users is represented by projecting the other side of the desktop between the users in actual size. A Tele-Face prototype has been demonstrated at an exhibition, and generally positive results were obtained.
