A Method for Improving Picture Quality of Irreversibly Encoded Sub-Sampling Pictures

Abstract(in English) Unprocessed luminance component of the pictures, which are picked up by current Super Hi-Vision cameras or single imaging plate-type cameras for consumers, consists of sub-sampling data, so when the images are directly coded in a high compression rate by an irreversible encoding like MPEG2, distinctive degradation of picture quality occurs. As a method for improving the degradation, we invent a new pre and post processing technique; in which high frequency ingredients of horizontal and vertical direction are converted to the orthogonal frequency area where original picture has no ingredients, then numbers of pixel are decreased into 3/4 in both horizontal and vertical direction. When this process is applied, the picture quality of irreversibly encoded sub-sampling pictures in high compression rate is improved with less quantity of data.
