Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Sign Language has some kinds of non manual signal (NMS), facial expressions, head tilts, shoulder raises, and mouth movements in grammatical ways. One of them is mouthing Japanese words during signing. In JSL, signers borrow the shape of mouth to represent mouthing from mouth movements in spoken Japanese. Sandler et al. (2006) shows while it is true that the form of mouthing came from spoken language, it was made into their own ways during their daily use. This paper discusses the multimodal functions of mouthing in JSL conversation through the observation of the case of mouthing in repair part.
