Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Fused fiber couplers with different cross sectional shapes were fabricated, and the polarization and wavelength dependences were investigated. In case the cross sectional shape at the coupler waist is a dumbbell with a narrow neck, the coupling coefficient and its wavelength dependence for y-polarized light grow larger than those for x-polarized light with narrowing the neck. In case of the cross sectional shape of a near-circular ellipse, the coupling coefficient for x-polarized light becomes a little larger than that for y-polarized light, and their wavelength dependences increase with the shape getting closer to a circle in spite of the shorter effective coupler length. The polarization differences of the coupling coefficient and its wavelength dependence are small for the cross sectional shape between a dumbbell with a thick neck and a near-circular ellipse, and the fused fiber couplers depend little on the polarization.
