Photodarkening in Ytterbium-Doped Silica Fibers

Abstract(in English) We have investigated the origin of photodarkening phenomenon in Al-Yb doped fibers by ESR, XAFS, and optical transmittance measurements. It has been proved that there is a similarity between the defects created by the incidence of pump light and by the irradiation with y-ray, and that the increase in the transmission loss by photodarkening in the VIS-NIR wavelength region is primarily arose from the optical absorption by defects of Al-oxygen hole center (Al-OHC).
