Abstract(in English) | In general, vapor-deposited thin films lack interfacial stability due to the nature of physical adsorption on the substrate. This study employed a surface-initiated vapor deposition polymerization method to prepare carbazole polymer thin films that are chemically bound to the substrate surface. Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) that has azo initiator as a terminal group was prepared on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) surface, on which carbazole acrylate monomers were evaporated under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The surface morphology was compared for the films that were prepared with/without the SAM layer or with/without UV irradiation. It was found that the UV irradiation leads to polymerization of carbazole monomers, yielding polymer thin films having molecular weight of several hundred thousands, irrespective of the substrate species. On the other hand, the surface morphology was largely dependent on the existence of SAM. Uniform and smooth polymer thin films were obtained only when the monomers were evaporated on the SAM under UV irradiation. It was suggested that the formation of uniform thin films comes not only from the modification of surface energy but the growth of polymers that are chemically bound to the substrate surface. |
