Cooperative TCP Rate Control Scheme for Power Line Communications

Abstract(in English) A high-speed power line communications (PLC) system has great potential to serve as an infrastructure for home networking. However, various special environmental factors, such as power level attenuation and fluctuations of source impedance and noise by other equipment, often severely degrade the communication performance. In the present paper, we focus on the effect of the abovementioned negative factors on the flow-level performance of end-to-end data transmission (i.e., TCP). We first develop a new module on the NS-2 network simulator, which is driven by time-varying packet error rate information prepared beforehand, to emulate the PLC's data transmission including some dedicated mechanisms. The simulator is validated by comparing the flow-level performance obtained from experiments on a real PLC network and that from simulations. Next, we address the problems of co-existing multiple TCP flows or TCP/VoIP flows over PLC and then propose a new network-supported TCP rate control scheme to solve this problem. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
