Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It has been assumed in the literature that Japanese has two types of passive morpheme -rare: (i) argument-reducing -rare (which derives the so-called direct passives), and (ii) argument-taking -rare (which derives the so-called indirect passives). This paper shows that the former can only be attached to the verbs whose arguments are NP-ga and NP-o, based upon the observation regarding the possibilities of scope interpretations, and proposes that the argument structure should include the specification of case-markers in the Lexicon.
