Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Case-markers represent the relationship between a noun and the predicate, and this relationship cannot be determined until the predicate is given. Therefore, to comprehend a sentence, information of case-markers must be retained until the predicate is realized. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a listening span test to assess the working memory capacity, and a picture selection task to examine children's sentence comprehension. In the latter test, we used scrambling and predicate-fronted scrambling sentences to test the hypothesis. The results show that the above holds for children in the high memory span group, and support the claim that in order to comprehend case-markers correctly, there must be sufficient working memory capacity so that the information of case-markers can be retained until the predicate is realized.
