Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Spike sequences recorded from cortical neurons in an awake animal are known to be highly irregular. It is crucial for elucidating the cognitive function in the brain to understand how the irregular spike sequences are caused by intrinsic properties of the neurons and/or input properties from surrounding neurons. To clarify this, we estimated the inter-spike interval (ISI) distributions from the spike sequences recorded from in vivo neurons in rat motor cortex during a self-paced forelimb movement task. We found that the ISIs obeyed long-tailed power-law distributions. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that the firing rate of in vivo cortical neuron varies largely over time and its distribution obeys a gamma distribution. The gamma distribution of firing rate infers a novel principle, minimum conditional entropy principle, that the input firing rate is designed in a way to maximize the neuronal reliability of the spike generating mechanism by minimizing the influence of translation noise.
