Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We discuss the method of reducing a bend loss of a dielectric waveguide using the semivectorial finite-difference beam-propagation method. It is numerically shown that a dummy core, which is placed at the outer side of the bend, contributes to the generation of supermodes. The field of the odd supermode is confined well in the core, so that the bend loss is significantly reduced. This technique is applied to an embedded waveguide, in which a metal film is loaded at the outer side of the bend. The use of the metal film serves to generate the supermode for only the quasi-TM mode. This leads to the suppression of the bend loss only for the quasi-TM mode. As a result, the polarization dependent loss is reduced over a wide range of wavelengths.
