Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) As the Internet is characterized by its scale, diversity, and decentralized administration, it is of reasonable difficulty to timely acquire the internal status or to indentify the causes of communication performance degradation, with which the network measurement technology has been emerging to cope. In particular, approaches in which each individual element (equipment) inside the network is simply monitored are neither sufficient nor efficient in some cases. As a result, "the end-to-end measurement technology" has extensively been studied and developed, in which the end-to-end behaviors of packets traversing paths on the network, including packets being returned by intermediate routers, are carefully observed to acquire and estimate the information on various characteristics and internal-states of the network. However, only a limited part of this technology seems to be deployed by real ISP operators, while distributed network applications (by the overlay approach) may need and be hoping for the end-to-end measurement technology. By briefly touching the past trends, standardization, and advanced techniques, we discuss the future direction.
