Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The Internet and NGN which was started in March last year in Japan are based on IP protocol based packet networks, and it is envisaged that the Internet and NGN will coexist in 2010s. The current legacy telephone networks and cellular phone networks will be merged into NGN gradually. It is noted, however, that the high level requirements for ICT infrastructure in 2020s may make it hard to obtain solutions by means of a improvement of IP protocol based technologies, but clean-slate designed architecture and protocols may be indispensable. This type of network is called New Generation Network. In this paper, current status of R & D on New Generation Network in Japan as well as in the world is introduced.
