Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this presentation the relationship between safety and peace of mind is discussed. The safety level of our society has been increasing for decades as represented by the decrease of the number of deaths caused by variety of hazards. Public peace of mind, however, does not seem to correspond to the improvement in safety. This inconsistency can be explained by the difference in the characteristics between technical risk assessment and public risk perception. The characteristics of risk perception are explained using dual-processing theory. One of the main factors of public peace of mind is societal trust in risk managers. An integrated model of trust is proposed, supported by results of a survey that examined the determinants of social trust.
