Abstract(in English) | In past two decades, there were big technical breakthroughs in transoceanic undersea cable systems. The first is the introduction of the optical fiber in the trans-pacific undersea cable system in 1989, the second is the adoption of optical amplifier (EDFA)-based repeaters in 1995, and the last one is the introduction of the wavelength multiplexing (WDM) technologies with high-speed optical signals from 2000. With EDFA repeaters and WDM technologies, 1000-fold increase of the system capacity has been achieved in a decade. In this paper, the author reviews the evolution of the ultra long-haul undersea cable systems together with his own related research topics. |
