Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In past two decades, there were big technical breakthroughs in transoceanic undersea cable systems. The first is the introduction of the optical fiber in the trans-pacific undersea cable system in 1989, the second is the adoption of optical amplifier (EDFA)-based repeaters in 1995, and the last one is the introduction of the wavelength multiplexing (WDM) technologies with high-speed optical signals from 2000. With EDFA repeaters and WDM technologies, 1000-fold increase of the system capacity has been achieved in a decade. In this paper, the author reviews the evolution of the ultra long-haul undersea cable systems together with his own related research topics.
