Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Communication between nurses and patients is essential for the provision of nursing care. The present study investigated whether the nurse wearing a mask affected the quality of communication between nurses and patients. A questionnaire study was conducted individually in an inpatient tuberculosis ward. The 74 patients were asked to estimate the extent to which the nurse wearing a mask affected their impressions of nurses, how well they communicated. The 32 nurses reported how they imagined the patients felt about the nurses and daily nurse-patient communications. The nurses also reported how well they communicated with the patients. The results show that the patients adapted quickly to the nurses' use of a mask after one week in the hospital, and this level of acceptance remained stable after four weeks in hospital. The patients did not report any severe difficulty in communication due to their inability to see the nurses' full faces. The nurses' beliefs regarding patients' feelings differed from the patients' ratings. Implications of these findings and directions for future research are discussed.
