Acceleration of Noise Reduction for Highly Compressed Images Using GPU

Abstract(in English) In compressed images by using coding standard like JPEG or MPEG2, block noise and/or ringing effect are noticeable under low bit rate due to the nature of the algorithm itself. To reduce these noises, several noise reduction methods by post processing have been proposed. In our group, modified trimmed mean (MTM) filter based algorithm has been also proposed. Obviously, these denoising methods should be implemented as real time procedures. In this paper, we propose an acceleration technique of the processing time of MTM filter based noise reduction algorithm by using Graphic Processing Unit (GPU). From experiments, it is shown that GPUs accelerate the method considerably compared with processing time on a CPU and they can reduce noise from compressed moving images of Full HD size (1920×1080 pixels) in real time.
