Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Specific absorption rate (SAR) is used as a metric for human protection from microwave exposure although biological effect for microwave exposure is caused by the temperature rise. In particular, peak spatial-average SAR is used as a metric for localized exposures, however, the rationale for the limit has not been well investigated. In the present study, we calculated SAR and resultant temperature rise in rats due to 1.47-GHz microwave energy. As a result, we found that calculated and measured results are in reasonable agreement between body-core temperatures, while the computed temperature rise in the brain is smaller than the measured one. The reason for this difference may be attributed to reduced metabolism and thermoregulatory response due to the administration of anesthesia.
