Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A deaf woman was involved in a traffic accident, and had the left wrist and right clavicle broken. Her injuries were acknowledged as residual disabilities. The accident has also caused impairment in her sign language, but the language impairment was not acknowledged as such, because Automobile Liability Security Act in Japan does not consider sign language as a language. All that the act applies to is an oral language, i.e., the Japanese language only. The woman brought a lawsuit with the court to have her sign language impairment acknowledged as language impairment. This paper discusses the way how we should assess the degree of language impairment in sign language, and also shows the results of the assessment.
