Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The present research focused on the listener's eye blinks in psychotherapeutic counseling and advice sessions, as well as temporal changes in eye blinks, and examined the mental processes of these listeners. Two 50-minute counseling sessions which were positively evaluated by experts were analyzed. In addition, two 50-minute ordinary advice sessions between two high school teachers and the clients from the counseling sessions were analyzed. All sessions represented role-playing. The eye blinking of listeners (i.e., counselors, teachers) was video-recorded, and from each case, six excerpts in which the counselors/teachers were listening to their clients, and six in which they were speaking to their clients were considered for analysis. Eye-blinks were counted individually, for each excerpt. The results indicated that intraindividual variability in the listeners' eye blinking was larger in counseling as compared to advice sessions. Further, during the period starting from the 10-20th min to just before closing, eye blinking rate when listening to the clients was lower than when speaking to them for both counseling sessions, while there was almost no difference between listening and speaking and no temporal changes in the case of the two advice sessions. These results suggested that the analysis of eye blinking may bring light into counselors' mental processes related to the understanding of their clients and setting the stage for changes within clients.
