Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Wireless communications are characterized by high bit-error rates and burst errors, which arise due to interference fading, shadowing, terminal mobility, and etc. Since the traditional design of the core protocols of the wired Internet did not take wireless networks into account, the performance over wireless networks is largely degraded. Especially, the wireless ad hoc networks that perform the multi-hop communication aggravate the problem of wireless communication further. To solve the problem, there has been increased interest in the cross-layer design methodology that lets protocols belonging to different layers cooperate in sharing network-status information. However, such cross-layer design for wireless networks may lead to various negative consequences. In this paper, we review the cross-layer networking technology for wireless communication, and especially describe the performance improvement in the transport layer in detail.
