Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Fumio Koizumi (1958) argued that "Perfect 4th interval frame (P4 frame)" is one of the universal characteristics of musical scale. We examined whether it is easier for adults to learn a scale containing P4 frame (i.e., P4 frame scale) over that containing non-P4 frame (i.e., non-P4 frame scale). Participants listened to 70min of music in either P4 frame scale or non-P4 frame scale. Before and after exposure, they had to detect mistuned tones in test melodies of both P4 frame scale and non-P4 frame scale. Results showed that when participants were exposed to P4 frame scale, their performance on test melodies of P4 frame scale significantly changed (in negative direction) by exposure. On the other hand, when participants were exposed to non-P4 frame scale, their performance on both types of test melodies did not significantly changed by exposure. These results suggest that participants were more sensitive to exposure music in, listening to music of P4 frame scale rather than those of non-P4 frame. |
