Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Sudden visual motion applied during reaching movement induces an involuntary manual response in the direction of visual stimulus with very short latency (Manual Following Response: MFR). We have previously revealed that the MFR is more greatly induced when the gaze is directed to the reaching-target than when it is not directed. This indicated that the visuomotor gain for the reflexive manual response was modulated by the spatial relationship between reaching-target and gaze point, but it remains unclear when the MFR gain is updated. To explore whether the gain modulation is completed at the motor planning stage or the gain modulates in the motor execution stage, we quantified the MFR amplitude after gaze shift during reaching movement. The MFR gain changed according to the gaze location relative to the reaching target after gaze shift, suggesting that the relationship between gaze point and reaching target was being calculated and used for updating the MFR gain continuously throughout the reaching movement. Furthermore, to examine the impact of the attention shift on the MFR modulation, we conducted an experiment in which subjects were asked to shift the spatial attention without shifting gaze during reaching movement. However, the MFR gain was not modulated according to the change of attention location. This indicates that the top-down attention shift is not enough to modulate the MFR gain, but the gaze direction relative to the reaching target would be a significant factor for the MFR gain setting. |
