Sum-Product Decoding of 3GPP Turbo Code

Abstract(in English) Turbo code has been adopted for the third-generation mobile phone standard (3GPP standard), and it will be adopted for next generation mobile communication standard with high-speed communication. To apply 3GPP standard Turbo code for high-speed communication, sum-product algorithm (SPA) decoding which is less complex, is examined. A previous report proposed to replacement of each constituent decoder by SPA decoders, but this decoding method deteriorates BER performance. We propose a SPA decoding method over the Tanner graph of the whole turbo code. To reduce the time of decoding, min-sum (MS) approximation is introduced. To search for parity check which is suitable for SPA, long constraint length (LCL) parity checks are tried. In addition, a concatenated parity check matrix is used, and a removing four-cycle method (RmFC) is applied before sum-product decoding. As a result, the proposed method realized E_b/N_0=1.1[dB] better BER performance at BER=10^<-6> than previous method. The LCL parity check decoding realized E_b/N_0=0.7[dB] better BER performance at BER=10^<-6> than (15,13)_8 parity check decoding. The concatenated parity check of (43,61)_8 and (201,317)_8 shows good BER performance among three kinds of concatenated parity checks. The proposed method which uses the concatenated parity check of (43,61)_8 and (201,317)_8 after RmFC suppresses the deterioration of BER performance and the gap to max-log-MAP decoding becomes E_b/N_0=1.3[dB] at BER=10^<-6>. The laytency for decoding of the proposed method becomes 1/2000 of that of max-log-MAP decoding.
