Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We are aiming to create an information environment that can provide various applications such as digital broadcasting and Web services to visually impaired people. In the present study, we developed an "integrated Braille interface" (called Braille IF)-Which aims to improve accessibility by enabling an application programmer (even one who does not know Braille) to output to a Braille device. Through this Braille interface, an application-programming interface (API) for communicating data between applications and various Braille devices is provided, and a device driver for multiple Braille devices can be implemented. Moreover, it provides two additional functions: a function that allows keys to be freely assigned by a simple operation according to a user's mental model; and a function that conveys information for operating response and assisting navigation by means of vibrations chiefly to deaf-blind people. The rest of this paper overviews the principle of Braille IF, describes its functions, and presents results or evaluation tests on its operation response speed.
