Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper describes an overview of character recognition techniques and its application to postal sorting systems. I first explain current Japanese mail sorting process. In the process, new type sorting machines are used. They are acceptable seven-digits postal codes and barcodes. Next I explain postal code recognition methods and destination address interpretation methods. As a fresh topic, a new concept of mail sorting process without using barcodes is finally introduced.
