Abstract(in English) In wireless mesh networks based on WiMAX, each mesh node has its own service area which provides wireless Internet access environment for endhosts. The network performance would degrade due to radio interference when multiple service areas overlap each other. To avoid such problems, it is important that each mesh node knows the exact location and size of the service area of neighboring mesh nodes. However, such information is not always available, dependent on the topology construction algorithms. In this paper, we propose a method to determine the size of service area using information obtained in topology construction based on IEEE 802.16 WiMAX mechanism. Specifically, each mesh node estimates the distance to the nearest neighbor node, and sets the size of a circle as its service area whose radius is based on the distance. Through performance evaluation, we confirm that by using our method, the size of single-covered area is increased by average of 32% compared with the existing method, and that the maximum number of overlapped service areas is reduced by roughly 50%.
