Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) IPTV, and indeed digital TV, suffers from perceptible delays when the channel is switched (zapped). This paper tackles the user's discomfort caused by this waiting time. We start with a psychological evaluation of user reaction to the delay and follow that with the development of a method of interim screen alteration to minimize the subjective delay. An extensive experiment in the laboratory examined the impact of various screen effects on the subjective delay as recorded by 20 subjects. The experiment showed that users were most comfortable when the screen display exhibited a noticeable change upon zapping followed by the display of a text description of the contents of the next program. The desired channel is shown when it is received and decoded. In addition, experimental results suggested that the amount of text information presented ahead of the desired channel should be reflected the time for which it is shown to the user.
