| Abstract(in English) | The purpose of this study was to investigate the similarities and differences in the metaphorical concepts of "MEMORY" between the English and Japanese language, according to the framework of Lakoff & Johnson (1980). From a psychological viewpoint, the process of "MEMORY" was firstly divided into three stages, "encoding," "storage," and "retrieval," and subsequently into five stages, adding "forgetting" and "the power of memory" to render a more complete picture. Referring to a dictionary of English collocations, English expressions composed of "Verb+MEMORY" structures were exhaustively collected and analyzed. The results revealed the specific metaphorical concepts of "MEMORY" and their quantity in relation to the five stages of the "MEMORY" process. Also, the percentage of English expressions with the metaphorical concepts of "MEMORY" similar to those in Japanese, which permit literal translation into Japanese, was shown. Lastly, it was verified that this kind of research involves the risk of being affected by the subjective interpretation and judgment of the researchers involved. |
