Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Factor analyses were performed on the power fluctuations of British English derived through critical band filters as in Ueda and Nakajima [(2008). JASA, 123, 3163.]. Factor scores of the first three factors were presented as functions of time for each phoneme. Factor scores at temporal centers of phonemes showed similar tendencies in one male speaker and two female speakers. Sonorants and obstruents had clearly different factor score distributions. We suggest a new phonological rule that consonant clusters at syllable onsets are connected with a one-way movement along a "sonority" path identified in the factor score space. This rule may be able to resolve a theoretical obstacle when we introduce the traditional concept of sonority in order to understand syllable formation.
