Abstract(in English) | Recently, the prostheses for human nervous systems to treat incurable neural diseases are colleting much attention in the field of medical bioengineering. One of those is expected to compensate the disabled neural functions by means of the electrical stimulation delivered from implanted microelectrodes. In order to achieve higher spatial resolution of the stimulation, the electrodes are required to have lower electrical impedance so that the electrode tip can be as small as the single neuron size. For this purpose, however, physiological experiments should be conducted to quantitatively elucidate the neuronal response properties with the spatially localized stimuli, in the single neuron level. In this study, therefore, we have developed a new method for constructing metal microelectrodes available for in-vitro physiological experiments. We employed the glass micro-pipettes commonly used in the intracellular recordings as the casing, and inserted a metal wire into the micropipette, and then electroplated the platinum black onto the wire tip to fill the inside of micropipette. Furthermore, we examined if those platinum micro-electrodes can be used for the electrical stimulation to the biological neurons in electrophysiological experiments. |
